Description of Excursions

Moon Valley. (PM Service)

We’ll begin our tour from your hotel to explore the Valley of the Moon and the Licarantay Lookout, iconic tourist attractions in northern Chile. The Valley of the Moon is part of the Cordillera de la Sal mountain range and is undoubtedly its most visited area. Its glittering mountains, enormous dunes, rock formations, and ravines make it a true spectacle to behold. You’ll see the Tres Marías, the Canyon, the Amphitheater, the Victoria Salt Mine, and the Licarantay Viewpoint. We’ll begin the tour by departing from San Pedro de Atacama toward the Cordillera de la Sal in the Atacama Desert—the driest place on Earth—heading to one of its most picturesque spots: the Valley of the Moon. The names alone give a clear hint of the landscape, where rock formations shaped by erosion, salt flats, the Duna Mayor, and views that will make you feel like you’re on another planet reign supreme.

We’ll visit the Tres Marías, the Canyon, and the Amphitheater. To conclude the tour, we’ll enjoy the sunset from the Licarantay viewpoint, where you’ll see the desert gradually change colors, with massive volcanoes on the horizon, offering a spectacle that will leave you speechless. Afterward, we’ll return to the hotel. * Approximate start time: 2:30–3:10 p.m.

* Estimated end time: 6:30 p.m.

Rainbow Valley, Petroglyphs, and Yerbas Buenas. Morning Tour

We’ll begin our tour from your hotel to admire the rock art and explore the colorful mountains of the Rainbow Valley. Located about 90 km from San Pedro de Atacama, it lies in the Río Grande basin, very close to the Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs. It owes its name to the wide variety of hues visible on the valley’s hills. The colors reflect the great richness and varying concentrations of clay, salts, and minerals. We set out very early, traveling 90 km from San Pedro toward the Río Grande basin, where we arrive at the Rainbow Valley. It gets its name from the variety of colors visible on the valley’s hills: earthy tones, reds, beiges, greens, whites, and yellows.

All of these are set against a backdrop of white salt deposits and a blue sky. The colors in this area reflect the ecological richness of the clay, minerals, and salts. We’ll explore this site on a hike that takes 1 hour each way, then we’ll head to the Salado River area, where a small valley forms and we’ll take a hike to enjoy the scenery. Next, we’ll visit the Yerbas Buenas petroglyphs, and finally, we’ll return to San Pedro de Atacama, where the activity ends.

* Approximate start time: 7:00–7:30 a.m.
* Estimated end time: 12:30 p.m.

Altiplanic Lagoons, Piedras Rojas, and Laguna Chaxa

We’ll begin our experience directly from your hotel early in the morning to start our excursion outside the city. During the drive to Piedras Rojas and the Altiplanic Lagoons, we’ll explore major tourist sites in the Atacama Desert. To reach Laguna Piedras Rojas, also known as Salar de Aguas Calientes, we’ll drive up to an altitude of 3,800 meters, where we’ll take a one-hour-and-fifteen-minute hike to admire the impressive copper-colored rock formations, as well as the surrounding lagoons and salt flats. Next, we’ll head to the Miscanti and Miñiques Altiplanic Lagoons, where our guide will explain the flora and fauna that inhabit this environment.

We’ll also stop at Laguna Chaxa, where you’ll have the chance to observe flamingos in their natural habitat. We’ll continue our journey through Socaire and the Tropic of Capricorn, where we’ll make a brief stop to take some memorable photos. Finally, we’ll return to San Pedro de Atacama to conclude our tour.

* Approximate start time: 6:00–6:40 a.m.
* Estimated end time: 5:00 p.m.

Tatio Geysers, Machuca, Vado de Putana. Early Morning Tour

We’ll begin our tour directly from your hotel, exploring one of the most remarkable geothermal fields on the planet and immersing ourselves in the atmosphere of a picturesque regional town. Our first destination is the amazing “Tatio Geysers” geothermal field, located 4,200 meters above sea level. This site is home to the largest cluster of geysers in the Southern Hemisphere and the third largest in the world. To enjoy this unique experience, we’ll set out before sunrise, heading toward the heights of the Andean altiplano. There, we’ll witness a breathtaking spectacle: the 80 geysers with their columns of steam—a phenomenon found nowhere else in the world.

We’ll spend about an hour and a half exploring this fascinating landscape. After recharging our energy, we’ll continue our return journey, exploring the hills and mountains of the majestic Andes. Along the way, we’ll have the opportunity to admire the diverse high-altitude ecosystems, such as the Machuca wetlands and the Putana fords, which are home to exceptionally rich biodiversity.

Our final stop will be in the charming town of Machuca, where we can immerse ourselves in its local culture and traditions before returning to the starting point.

* Estimated start time (approx.): 4:30–5:10 a.m.
* Estimated end time: 12:00 p.m.
