Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park's proximity to Kigali makes it perfect for a one or two day excursion from the Rwandan capital, offering something different from the rolling hills and dense jungle that characterize the country's landscape. Although Akagera cannot compare with more established parks such as Kenya's Maasai Mara or Tanzania's Serengeti, recent efforts to relocate both rhinos and lions to the park mean that it is now a Big Five destination.

Although elephant, rhino and leopard sightings are rare, a day or two in the park is a great way to observe wildlife found nowhere else in Rwanda.

The park's recent renaissance makes it a truly off-the-beaten-path destination and a great place to get away from the tourists that crowd parks like Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park. The park offers a wide range of activities, including night boat safaris on Lake Ihema.

Day 5 - Akagera - Volcanoes NP

Departure from the park on safari. Continuation to Volcanoes National Park (~6h30/270km).

All inclusive at the lodge

1x Double room

Day 6 - Volcanoes NP

After breakfast, departure by vehicle to the park offices, from where you will begin the long awaited visit. Going deep into the park, you will go up to meet one of the mountain gorilla families.

Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the lodge.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park was founded in 1925 with the purpose of protecting its mountain gorilla population. Today Rwanda's main tourist attraction, Virunga Volcanoes is one of only two places in the world where gorillas habituated to humans can be tracked (the other being Bwindi National Park in Uganda).

This is where Dian Fossey lived and died, studying and protecting our primate cousins, the film 'Gorillas in the Mist' made her efforts famous.

The opportunity to get up close and personal with a family of gorillas and spend an hour observing these amazing creatures up close is one of the most unforgettable natural experiences you can do.

With fantastic lodging options, Volcanoes National Park is an extraordinary natural destination that is home to an incredible species of animal.

Day 7 - Volcanoes NP - Karongi - Nyungwe

After breakfast departure to the town of Karongi (~3,5h/165km), a town on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu, which we will sail to see Napoleon Island. After sailing, lunch in a restaurant in the city and continuation to Nyungwe National Park (~2h/100km).

All Inclusive at the lodge

1x Double Room

Double The Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park covers an area of 1000 km² of southwestern Rwanda and is an area of incredible biodiversity with rainforest, bamboo, grasslands, swamps and marshes that have been described by authors as Africa's answer to the Galapagos Islands.

The main attraction of the National Park are the primates, where up to 13 different species have been identified, a quarter of the continent, including some groups of chimpanzees and colobus accustomed to humans that can be visited accompanied by park guides.

It is also a paradise for bird lovers, with almost 300 species, butterflies, trees (250) and orchids climbing the tall trunks.

Day 8 - Nyungwe

Early departure for tracking black and white colobus. After tracking we continue the trek to Kamiranzovu Falls returning to the lodge in time for dinner. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon departure for a walk on the hanging bridges over the forest canopy. Optionally, instead of colobus tracking and Kamiranzovu Falls chimpanzee tracking can be done.

NOTE: Although chimpanzee encounters are never guaranteed, due to the activity of the chimpanzees and the thick forest canopy, the expert rangers accompanying us have the means and skills to do the tracking with a high percentage of success.

Day 9 - Nyungwe - Kigali - Return

After breakfast departure to Kamembe airport (~1h/36km) for the 09:50 flight with scheduled arrival at Kigali international airport at 10:20. Connection and departure on international flight back to Mexico.
